Frequently Asked Questions
Gates
How are your gates constructed?
Our wooden framed gates are made using 1.5” cedar or cypress wood. Our panels are 16 gauge carbon steel that are welded to 1/2” tube steel frames. We typically attach an 1/8” steel band around the outer edges of each gate.
Our steel fabricated gates are welded using 16 gauge carbon steel panels to varying sizes of tube steel frames, depending upon the size of your gate. All hardware for these gates is typically welded to the gate frame. How do I measure for my new gate?
For existing post areas, you will need to measure the interior distance between the inside edge of the posts. Because not all posts are square, you will need to get this measurement both at the top and bottom of the posts. You can see a video tutorial of how to measure for your gate here. What if I don’t have a fence or post set yet? How do I determine the appropriate gate and post size for my space?
This would depend on the lawn or garden equipment that would need to pass through the opening. For example, if it’s only for humans passing, it can be more narrow, versus an entrance for a lawnmower. Are your gates pet friendly?
We can make the openings between gate slats as narrow or wide as desired, so as to make them pet approved.
Should I choose a wood framed gate or a steel framed gate?
Steel Frame -
Pros: Maintenance free, weather resistant, included (welded on) hardware
Cons: Less room for painted trim than wood-frame gates
Wood Frame -
Pros: More traditional style, blend with many traditional house styles, more room for colors of paint, charming hardware
Cons: Higher maintenance - we recommend they are repainted annually and keep all debris off the bottom of the gate for prolonged wood life, higher cost, hardware is a separate costHow do I choose a pattern for my gate? How much input do I have in the design process?
We offer X beautiful standard gate patterns from which to select. However, if you would like a custom pattern, contact Simone at simone@simoneartanddesign.com to discuss design and pricing. Please note that listed pricing estimates do not include custom design work, and thus will increase the overall price at varying rates, depending upon design complexity. For custom designs, initial pricing estimates include up to two edits. After that, a $50 fee will apply per additional edit.Do you provide design sketches?
We do not offer paper or computer generated sketches. However, once we have finalized your proposal (signed contract + initial deposit), we do directly sketch the concept onto the panel for your approval prior to cutting it out.How do I choose my gate color?
You can see the colors we offer for gates here. If you are seeking a specific color we do not offer, feel free to reach out to simone@simonewilsonartandesign.com to see if we can provide it for you. An additional fee may apply for custom colors.
Do you provide hardware?
Yes. You are welcome to use your own hardware; however, we have done extensive research and have selected the strap hinges we use for our wood frame gates specifically because we believe they hold the weight of the gate better than most. All of our hardware is handmade steel. For our steel gates, we provide welded on hinges and latches. How do I determine which side of the gate the hinges go on/which way my gate swings?
This has a lot to do with how level the area is where the gate is being installed and which way the ground slopes. See our tutorial on how to determine this information.Do you provide delivery/installation?
Yes, for those local to Atlanta, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina, we provide delivery and installation services for an additional fee.Can I pick up my gate and install it myself?
Absolutely. We’re happy to provide any information you need to do so.Can you add a panel to an existing door or gate?
Yes. Let us know what size you need. We will provide a steel framed, pre-drilled panel that is easy to install. Can you ship my gate?
Yes. For smaller gates, we typically use Fedex. Everything else is shipped via cargo shipping service. We will provide shipping costs and invoice you prior to shipment. How do I maintain my gate?
We recommend any wood be repainted annually and debris blown/brushed off regularly, particularly at the bottom of the gate. Also, if posts sag, avoid letting the gate touch the ground to avoid moisture buildup over time. When and how do I pay?
For commissioned work, we require a 50% deposit upfront and the balance upon completion/delivery and installation.
